Skirmish Breaks Out During Joint Practice between Packers and Broncos: Misunderstanding Leads to Scuffle
During Friday's joint practice session between the Green Bay Packers and the Denver Broncos, tempers flared briefly as a misunderstanding unfolded, according to Zach Kruse of USA Today. The scuffle occurred when it appeared that Denver edge rusher Nik Bonitto had struck the arm of Packers quarterback Jordan Love. However, it was later revealed that Love's arm was actually hit by his own teammate, right tackle Zach Tom.
Love addressed the incident, stating, "I was going to throw and I think Zach Tom got pushed and hit my shoulder. I don't think it was anything with the D-line or anything like that. I think just friendly fire."
The play itself was recorded, but it is difficult to determine whether Tom accidentally bumped into Love or if Bonitto swung his arm around and inadvertently hit him. Love noted that many players on the field didn't fully see what had happened, leading to confusion among the teams.
"We make it a big point to stay away from the quarterback, so they might've thought the D-lineman hit my arm or something like that, which I don't think happened," Love explained.
Fortunately, Love will not have to worry about facing similar situations during the upcoming preseason contest against the Broncos, as he is not slated to play in Week 2.
Incidents like these serve as a reminder of the intensity and competitive nature found in joint practices. Despite being training sessions, players are eager to showcase their skills and often emotions can run high. It is crucial for teams to maintain discipline and ensure the well-being of all participants to avoid unnecessary confrontations.
As the preseason progresses, both the Packers and the Broncos will be looking to fine-tune their strategies and evaluate their players' performances in preparation for the regular season.
