Describing the situation as difficult, Ukraine's military highlights the strategic significance of Chasiv Yar, located in the partially-occupied Donetsk region.
Currently, Ukraine maintains full control over Chasiv Yar, which is situated on high ground. However, top Ukrainian commander fears that Russia aims to capture the town by May 9, coinciding with Soviet Victory Day in World War Two.
Nazar Voloshyn, a spokesperson for the eastern military command, acknowledges the challenges faced in the area, noting that the situation is controllable. He highlights the reinforcement and stabilization of the defense line by Ukrainian forces. Speaking on public broadcaster Suspilne, Voloshyn reveals that there are approximately 20,000-25,000 Russian servicemen attempting to storm Chasiv Yar and the surrounding settlements.
The capture of Chasiv Yar would bring Russia closer to Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, two strategically important cities currently under Ukrainian control. Russia has been gradually advancing in the region, but there is hope that the long-awaited U.S. military assistance, expected to reach Ukraine in a matter of days following its final approval this week, will provide relief from critical ammunition shortages.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy emphasized the difficulties faced by Ukrainian soldiers but expressed confidence that the necessary assistance would help level the playing field. He made these remarks on the messaging app Telegram.
The situation in Chasiv Yar remains tense as both Ukraine and Russia jockey for control. The international community closely watches these developments, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in the region.
