**Chinese Hackers Breach US Internet Providers, Beijing's Cyber Assault Intensifies**
In recent months, hackers affiliated with the Chinese government have successfully infiltrated multiple US internet service providers, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. This revelation highlights China’s continued effectiveness in compromising vulnerable computer networks across the globe.
The breach, known among investigators as "Salt Typhoon," involved infiltrating US broadband networks. The primary objective was to secure a foothold within these infrastructures, potentially accessing crucial data stored by telecommunications companies or enabling the execution of severe cyberattacks.
This latest incident builds on a pattern of increased cyber activity from Beijing. Just last week, US officials dismantled a network of over 200,000 compromised routers, cameras, and other internet-connected devices. This network had been infected by a Chinese hacking group identified as "Flax Typhoon."
These actions are part of a wider strategy by China to bolster its cyberhacking capabilities. Another hacking operation, dubbed "Volt Typhoon," aimed at infiltrating key infrastructure such as ports, water, and power utilities. The motive was to potentially cripple the US's ability to mobilize troops, weaponry, and supplies to Taiwan in the event of a conflict.
FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the scale of the threat earlier this year, stating, "China’s hacking program is larger than that of every other major nation, combined." This statement underscores the significant cyber threat posed by the Chinese government and the urgency of addressing these cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
