Rice University was left in shock and sorrow on Tuesday as the community grappled with the devastating news of two on-campus deaths, suspected to be a murder-suicide. The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a transfer student from Maryland who had quickly become a prominent leader in student activities at the university.
Classes at Rice were canceled as students, faculty, and staff tried to come to terms with the harrowing incident that unfolded on Monday at Jones College. Houston police are leading the investigation into the suspected murder-suicide, which occurred in Rodriguez Avila's dorm room. According to authorities, she was found shot to death next to a 22-year-old non-student who allegedly took his own life. The identity of the man has not been disclosed.
"Andrea's family arrived in Houston this morning and is receiving support from the university's leadership team during this profoundly challenging time," stated Rice University officials in a released statement. "They have requested privacy as they mourn their loss but are deeply appreciative of the outpouring of thoughts and prayers from the community."
Rodriguez Avila, originally from Nottingham, Maryland, was pursuing a career path in pre-law as a political science major at Rice. Prior to her transfer, she was actively involved in various student organizations at the Community College of Baltimore County, including the college-wide student programming board, the Multicultural Student Association, Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society, and the First Year Experience Mentor program.
Upon arriving at Rice University, Rodriguez Avila wasted no time in making connections and becoming involved on campus. She served as the deputy parliamentarian of the Rice Student Association, a peer academic adviser at Jones residential hall, and a member of the university's Honor Council.
Houston police responded to the dorm room after Rodriguez Avila's family requested a welfare check, leading to the tragic discovery. Rice Chief of Police Clemente Rodriguez confirmed that there was no forced entry. Additionally, a note detailing troubles in the relationship was found at the scene.
In response to the tragic incident, Rice University has activated a call center for students seeking help, and resources are being provided through the SAFE Office to support those affected by intimate partner violence. The university is committed to assisting students in need during this difficult time.
The investigation into the murder-suicide is ongoing. Rice University is cooperating fully with the authorities to ensure that justice is served and to prevent any such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
This heartbreaking loss has left the Rice University community deeply saddened, as friends, peers, and faculty remember Andrea Rodriguez Avila for her leadership, dedication, and vibrant presence on campus. The university will be offering support and counseling services to all who are affected by this devastating event.
