In a selfless act of bravery, retired couple Fred and Sheila McCoy ventured into the wild terrains of Kentucky to assist authorities in locating the remains believed to be those of Joseph Couch, the suspect who allegedly carried out a shooting spree on Interstate 75 on September 7. The McCloys, typically known for their historical YouTube videos about the Hatfield-McCoy feud, shifted their focus to aiding law enforcement in their search efforts.
Following the shooting incident that left five people injured and a community on edge, the McCloys decided to take action, despite not having been active in hiking due to previous health issues. As authorities conducted extensive searches across thousands of acres, fear lingered in the eastern Kentucky community of London, where the shooter had unleashed chaos on passersby from an elevated position using an AR-15.
Fred McCoy described their approach as turning into "bounty hunters" driven by the urgency of the situation as lockdowns and school closures became prevalent in the area. The couple documented their search journey on YouTube, capturing the moment they stumbled upon the remains deep within the dense woods. This discovery provided solace to the residents of London, with the Kentucky State Police acknowledging the invaluable contribution of the McCloys in this breakthrough.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear commended the efforts of the retired couple, emphasizing the significance of bringing closure to a distressing period in the affected communities. Despite the preliminary identification of the remains as Joseph Couch, final confirmation through DNA testing is still pending. The $25,000 reward announced by state police recognizes the instrumental role played by Fred and Sheila McCoy in assisting authorities in resolving the case.
