In a closely contested recount, Republican State Senator John McGuire has emerged victorious over incumbent Representative Bob Good in Virginia's 5th District congressional primary race. The recount, initiated by Good, concluded on Thursday evening, confirming McGuire's win by a narrow margin.
The Virginia State Board of Elections had initially declared McGuire the winner last month, citing his endorsement by former President Donald Trump and a lead of 374 votes out of over 62,000 cast in the June contest. The recount, conducted at Good's expense, confirmed McGuire's victory, although the lead slightly decreased to 370 votes.
Chief Judge Claude Worrell II, presiding over the recount, formally announced McGuire's win and the end of Good's term as the congressional representative for Virginia's 5th District. McGuire, a former Navy SEAL, confidently expressed his victory even before the judge's ruling, stating, "I don't mean to be disrespectful, but we won on June 18," according to the Associated Press.
Following the completion of the recount, Good gracefully acknowledged his defeat in a Facebook post, expressing disappointment in the outcome while expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Virginia's 5th District representative for the past 3.5 years.
During his time in office, Good had risen to prominence as the chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus earlier this year. However, his tenure was not without controversy, as he clashed with some members of his own party. Notably, Good was among a small group of eight caucus members who, along with 208 House Democrats, worked to remove former Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his position last year.
Prominent Republicans, including McCarthy, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, and fellow Freedom Caucus member Representative Warren Davidson, lent their support to McGuire's primary challenge against Good, further highlighting the divisions within the party.
Looking ahead, McGuire is set to face Democratic businesswoman Gloria Witt in the upcoming November general election. As the favored candidate in a predominantly Republican district, McGuire will aim to maintain party control and secure victory in the general election.
The outcome of the Republican primary race in Virginia's 5th District signifies a shift in leadership and sets the stage for a competitive general election campaign, where candidates from both major parties will contend for the opportunity to represent the district's interests in Congress.
