In a closely contested primary race in Virginia's 5th District, Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., has announced his intention to pursue a recount after the state's elections board certified the results showing him narrowly trailing his Republican challenger, state Sen. John McGuire.
The certified results from last month's GOP primary reveal that McGuire holds a slim lead of 374 votes, or less than 1 percentage point, over Good. Despite facing opposition from prominent figures such as former President Donald Trump and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Good's campaign manager and senior advisor, Diana Shores, stated that the campaign received strong demands from the people of the district to pursue a recount.
Although the margin of victory falls within the range that allows a recount to be requested, the cost will have to be covered by Good himself, as the margin is wide enough that the state will not provide funding. However, Shores mentioned that the campaign has already received thousands of dollars in donations to support their recount efforts.
Shores emphasized that the recount is not just about Good but about ensuring the fairness and transparency of the election process for the people of the district. By settling any questions surrounding the validity of the vote count, voters can confidently move forward to the general election.
The Virginia State Board of Elections, during their meeting on Tuesday afternoon, certified the primary results, officially confirming McGuire's lead in the deeply Republican 5th District. Good now has a period of 10 days to formally request a recount.
Despite McGuire's advantage in endorsements, including that of former President Trump, and significant financial support from outside groups affiliated with McCarthy, Good raised concerns about the validity of the vote count in specific areas of the district, although no evidence was provided.
If the recount does not favor Good, he would be at risk of becoming the first incumbent GOP member of Congress to lose to a primary challenger in this election cycle.
The pursuit of a recount reflects the desire for clarity and fairness in the primary race, as Rep. Bob Good seeks to overturn the narrow lead held by state Sen. John McGuire and continue his tenure representing Virginia's 5th District.
