### Cal Poly Mourns the Loss of Accomplished Track Athlete Shelby Daniele at 23

Cal Poly community is in mourning following the tragic death of Shelby Daniele, a distinguished track athlete who passed away last week at the age of 23. The university’s athletics department expressed deep sorrow over her untimely death, describing her as an exceptional student-athlete who left an indelible mark on the school.

Daniele recently graduated with a master's degree in agriculture with distinction, highlighting her academic as well as athletic prowess. Over her five-year tenure with the Cal Poly track and field team, she collected numerous accolades, including being a six-time All-Big West honoree and a two-time Big West champion. Not only did she excel on the track, but she also served as a team captain and set a school record in the women's indoor 200-meter with a remarkable 24.69 seconds.

Reflecting on her impactful presence, Cal Poly released a statement noting her significant contributions as both an athlete and a leader. "She was an incredible teammate and leader. She cared deeply for those around her, had a remarkable heart, and was a role model for so many," the school noted.

The cause of Daniele’s death was revealed by Brian Brandenburg, the father of a fellow Cal Poly athlete, who posted on Facebook that the young sprinter died of a brain aneurysm. He recounted how Daniele had inspired his own daughter, Eva, to join the track team at Cal Poly.

“Completely heartbreaking," Brandenburg wrote. "The young lady that was the driving force in Eva's decision to run Track at Cal Poly, Shelby Daniele, passed away last night of a brain aneurysm. Hug your children every time you can and tell them you love them every day. Please say a prayer for Shelby and her family."

Shelby Daniele’s legacy at Cal Poly will be remembered not only for her record-breaking performances in athletics but also for her profound influence on her teammates and her community.
