### New Evidence Prompts Review in Menendez Brothers Case
Prosecutors in Los Angeles are re-evaluating the case of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who have been serving life sentences for the murder of their parents more than 35 years ago. The review, announced by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, will consider new evidence that could potentially alter the brothers' current sentencing.
During a news conference, Gascón confirmed that while it is evident Erik Menendez, 53, and Lyle Menendez, 56, committed the murders, the new evidence warrants a thorough review. This new evidence includes a letter by Erik Menendez, which his attorneys argue supports claims of sexual abuse by their father.
The Menendez brothers have maintained that the murders were acts of self-defense, spurred by continuous physical, emotional, and sexual abuse from their parents. Their legal team contends that society's evolving understanding of sexual abuse might influence a different outcome if the case were tried today, possibly affecting their first-degree murder conviction and life-without-parole sentences.
Bryan Freedman, the attorney representing the extended Menendez family, conveyed strong support for the brothers' release. He specifically highlighted the wishes of Joan VanderMolen, the brothers' aunt, who fervently hopes for their liberation from prison.
