In a tragic incident on Saturday afternoon, a 58-year-old man fell off his boat in the notorious "playpen" area of Lake Michigan, prompting a search-and-rescue mission that has now transitioned into a recovery effort. The playpen is a popular spot adjacent to the 1000 block of North DuSable Lake Shore Drive where boaters gather.

The man's fall occurred at around 4:20 p.m., and the Chicago Fire Department immediately initiated search operations. However, as darkness fell, the search was temporarily called off. The following morning, search efforts resumed but were later transitioned into a recovery operation, now led by the Chicago Police Department's Marine Unit.

In a bid to map out the lakebed, recovery crews equipped a boat with "side scan sonar," a technology that assists in underwater exploration. Despite their diligent efforts, the man has yet to be located as of Sunday afternoon.

The playpen area, known for its heavy wave action protection by breakwaters, attracts boaters who enjoy the warm early summer weather. It often becomes a hub of activity, with boats forming chains and lively parties taking place. Referred to as "River North on the water" by a Chicago Reader article, the playpen has been the site of previous tragic incidents.

One such incident occurred last summer, when a 20-year-old woman lost her life and six others had to be rescued after their boat collided with a breakwall and capsized. The summer before that, the playpen experienced tragic events twice in less than a week. Two women on a raft suffered serious injuries after being pulled into a boat's propeller, resulting in one losing both legs below the knee. Shortly after, another person went missing while another was rescued in critical condition after falling into the water at the playpen.

In light of the ongoing recovery effort, authorities are urging caution and a focus on safety while enjoying recreational activities on Lake Michigan. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the potential dangers present even in seemingly calm waters.
