In a series of alarming incidents, a reckless driver led Boston police and state troopers on a high-speed chase across the city before crashing into Fenway Park on Monday morning. The driver, identified as 48-year-old Colleen Marie Gibbs from Salem, caused havoc as she weaved through traffic, ramming into multiple vehicles and even damaging a gate at the U.S. Coast Guard base in Boston's North End.
The pursuit began at approximately 7 a.m. in Revere when a state trooper encountered Gibbs driving erratically and aggressively along Ocean Avenue and Revere Street. As the trooper attempted to stop her, Gibbs defiantly honked her horn and shouted before accelerating away.
About half an hour later, a hit-and-run incident involving Gibbs occurred at the entrance of the Ted Williams Tunnel in East Boston. Although two vehicles were struck, no injuries were reported. The spree continued as Gibbs crashed into a gate at the U.S. Coast Guard base, causing significant damage.
However, the most surprising twist came when Gibbs forcefully entered Fenway Park through an opening near the Gate C entrance at approximately 8:30 a.m. The car collided with a forklift that was in the process of removing staging from a weekend event, according to a statement from the Red Sox.
Boston police, who were in close proximity to Fenway Park, attempted to halt the driver's progress by shouting commands. Ignoring the officers, Gibbs drove down a ramp into the ballpark. Quick-thinking officers then directed a forklift operator to lift the front of the car. When Gibbs failed to respond to commands to exit the vehicle, an officer resorted to breaking into the car with a metal pole.
The driver was eventually placed on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Luckily, her injuries are not considered life-threatening. Thankfully, no other individuals were injured in the chaotic incident that unfolded at Fenway Park.
Massachusetts State Police have announced their intention to pursue charges against Gibbs for her actions in Revere and East Boston. Meanwhile, Boston police will assess whether charges are warranted for the damage caused at the Coast Guard base and within Fenway Park.
The Red Sox, who are currently on the road, have confirmed that the team had no scheduled games on Monday. They will resume play against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.
Gibbs is set to appear in Boston Municipal Court, facing several charges including Assault with a Dangerous Weapon as stated in the Boston Police report. The investigation into her motive and any potential underlying circumstances behind her dangerous driving spree is ongoing.
