In an unexpected turn of events, rapper Killer Mike, also known as Michael Santiago Render, will not be facing charges for a skirmish that led to his arrest shortly after winning three Grammy Awards earlier this year. The incident occurred on February 4, moments after Render had received accolades at the Crypto.com Arena.
The details surrounding the altercation with a security guard remain blurry months later, but the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office announced this week that prosecutors have decided not to press charges against Render. The office confirmed that Render had successfully completed their hearing process, fulfilling the community service requirement imposed upon him.
According to media reports at the time, Render was alleged to have pushed a security guard while attempting to navigate through a security checkpoint. Shocking video footage emerged of the rapper being escorted out of the arena by officers shortly after collecting his Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Performance.
Render, in a statement shared with multiple media outlets, addressed the incident and expressed confidence in being cleared of any wrongdoing. He attributed the altercation to confusion regarding entry points into the arena and described the security guard involved as "overzealous."
Representatives for Render have not yet responded to requests for comment from The Washington Post on the recent developments.
The Grammy Awards that Render won earlier this year marked a significant achievement for the rapper, as they were his first wins since 2003 when he received Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for his collaboration with Outkast on "The Whole World." Prior to that, Render had received a nomination for Best Rap Song in 2018.
The decision not to charge Killer Mike comes as a relief for the Grammy-winning artist, who can now focus on his musical endeavors without the cloud of legal troubles hanging above him.
