With the conclusion of training camp and the preseason, the Las Vegas Raiders have made their final decisions to shape their 53-man roster. However, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) has vetoed a rule that had an impact on the team's quarterback situation.
According to reports, the NFLPA vetoed a revised Emergency 3rd Quarterback rule that would have allowed teams to elevate a bona fide quarterback from the practice squad an unlimited number of times. This means that the Raiders will have to keep Nathan Peterman on the active roster if they want to take advantage of the third quarterback rule.
The quarterback landscape for the Raiders includes Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell, and Peterman. While it would have made sense to have a veteran like Peterman as the team's insurance policy, it is likely that he will end up on the practice squad, while Minshew and O'Connell secure spots on the active roster.
Moving on to the running back position, the Raiders have chosen Zamir White, Alexander Mattison, Ameer Abdullah, and Dylan Laube for their roster. Unfortunately, Brittain Brown and Sincere McCormick did not impress during the preseason and training camp, leading to their release from the team.
At wide receiver, the Raiders have selected Davante Adams, Jakobi Meyers, Tre Tucker, DJ Turner, and Tyreik McAllister for their roster. Jalen Guyton, Kristian Wilkerson, Ramel Keyton, Terrell Bynum, Tulu Griffin, Alex Bachman, and Dax Milne were among those cut from the team.
The competition for the fourth tight end spot was a toss-up between John Samuel Shenker, Gentry, and Fotheringham. Ultimately, Shenker's versatility, as he took snaps at fullback and performed well on special teams, earned him a spot on the roster.
On the offensive line, the Raiders have chosen Kolton Miller, Cody Whitehair, Andre James, Dylan Parham, Thayer Munford Jr., Jackson Powers-Johnson, DJ Glaze, Andrus Peat, and Jordan Meredith. Will Putnam, Ben Brown, Dalton Wagner, Jalen McKenzie, Corey Luciano, Clark Barrington, and Andrew Coker were not selected for the roster.
The defensive line sees Maxx Crosby, Christian Wilkins, John Jenkins, Malcolm Koonce, Tyree Wilson, Adam Butler, Byron Young, Nesta Jade Silvera, Janarius Robinson, and Charles Snowden securing roster spots. It appears that the Raiders had to make some difficult decisions, as they opted to keep an underperforming defensive tackle, possibly prompting them to explore the waiver wire for additional options.
At linebacker, the Raiders have finalized their roster with Robert Spillane, Divine Deablo, Luke Masterson, Tommy Eichenberg, and Amari Gainer. Amari Burney, Kana'i Mauga, Jackson Mitchell, and DeShaun White did not make the cut.
In the cornerback position, the Raiders have selected Jack Jones, Jakorian Bennett, Nate Hobbs, Decamerion Richardson, M.J. Devonshire, and Brandon Facyson. Woo Governor, Sam Webb, Cornell Armstrong, Rayshad Williams, and Ja'Quan Sheppard were not included in the final roster.
It is important to note that the Raiders' roster decisions were influenced by the NFLPA's veto on the quarterback rule, leading to some unexpected changes. However, the team remains focused and is prepared to head into the regular season with a strong roster.
As cutdown day approaches on Tuesday, there may still be further adjustments as teams explore potential signings and examine available veterans to bolster their ranks. The Raiders will continue to evaluate their options as they gear up for their season opener.
