In a tragic incident near RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, an RAF pilot has lost their life when a Spitfire aircraft crashed in a field adjacent to the base, according to officials. Emergency services were called to the scene off Langrick Road on Saturday, shortly before 13:20 BST.
The iconic Spitfire, which belonged to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) based at RAF Coningsby, was involved in the accident, said the RAF. The RAF further stated that a thorough investigation into the crash will be conducted, refraining from speculating on the cause at this time.

RAF Coningsby serves as the home of the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), which operates a fleet of historic aircraft. These include six Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a C47 Dakota, and two Chipmunk aircraft utilized for training. These aircraft are piloted by regular RAF aircrew.
Notably, RAF Coningsby has been conducting training operations until approximately midnight every night this week. Additionally, the RAF's display Typhoon has been repainted in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of D-Day.
Officials at both RAF Coningsby and RAF Waddington have expressed concerns about plane-spotters getting too close to the aircraft, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a safe distance.
