In a troubling incident at Gettysburg College, two students have been suspended from the swim team following reports of a racial slur being scratched onto a student's body. The college officials confirmed receiving a disturbing report that a racial slur was etched onto a student using a plastic or ceramic tool. Describing the incident as serious, the school stated that it is actively investigating the matter through the student conduct process. The students involved have been prevented from participating in swim team activities while the investigation is ongoing.

The victim's family has reached out to provide more details, stating that the student had the N-word carved into their chest by someone they thought to be a friend. They have labeled the incident as a hate crime, emphasizing that the victim was the only person of color present at the scene. Expressing their deep concern and distress, the family revealed that the harmful act was carried out by a fellow student-athlete whom the victim trusted, using a box cutter to make the derogatory mark.

Amidst the ongoing investigation, the college's president expressed profound distress regarding the incident and its impact on the community's efforts to foster inclusivity. President Robert Iuliano emphasized that there is no place for words or actions that belittle individuals based on their identity and history within the campus community. He underscored the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students, cautioning against speculation based on incomplete information. The victim's decision to handle the matter internally, rather than involve the police, has raised further concerns following the incident.
