**Putin Welcomes Xi Jinping and World Leaders to BRICS Summit in Kazan**
Russian President Vladimir Putin warmly welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping and other global leaders at the beginning of a pivotal three-day BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia. The summit, which includes newly inducted BRICS members, is intended to demonstrate to the world that Russia remains a key player on the global stage despite ongoing political tensions with NATO.
Reflecting on the profound relationship between Russia and China, Putin greeted Xi as his "dear friend," emphasizing the stabilizing role their countries play on the international stage. Xi reciprocated the sentiment, acknowledging the deepening strategic cooperation between the two nations and their mutual goal of countering what they perceive as the US-dominated global order.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended the summit, where he received a warm reception, symbolized by a cake at Kazan airport. During his discussions with Putin, Modi emphasized the importance of achieving a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict, stating, "We believe that disputes should only be resolved peacefully. We totally support efforts to quickly restore peace and stability."
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was another notable attendee, expressing his country's continued respect and alliance with Russia. Ramaphosa highlighted Moscow's support during South Africa's fight against apartheid and reiterated that the relationship between the two nations is built on "strategic partnership, equality, and mutual respect."
The BRICS summit this year marks the first since the group expanded in 2023 to include new members like Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, although Argentina's recently elected President Javier Milei declined the invitation, signaling a pro-Western orientation. With over 36 confirmed participants and more than 20 heads of state expected to attend, the summit is poised to be a significant event on Russian soil.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the summit signifies the commencement of enhanced BRICS cooperation and aims to foster solidarity among Global South nations while striving for global peace and development.
This monumental gathering underscores Putin's strategic aim to showcase Russia's global alliances and its resistance to political isolation amidst ongoing international disputes.
