Comedic talent Punkie Johnson has announced her departure from the iconic sketch comedy show, "Saturday Night Live," after a successful run of four seasons. Johnson broke the news to her audience on Wednesday night during a comedy show in Brooklyn, followed by an Instagram video on Thursday where she explained the reasons behind her decision.
During her "Punkie and Friends" show, which saw fellow SNL cast members and writers in attendance, Johnson opened the floor for questions from the audience. However, a seemingly innocent question about her plans for the upcoming 50th season of SNL prompted her candid response. Johnson humorously revealed, "I didn't want to lie to my friends, so I said, 'Oh, I ain't comin' back.'"
Despite her departure, Johnson made it clear that there are no lingering hard feelings or conflicts. In her Instagram video, she expressed gratitude towards SNL, stating, "SNL was a dream that I didn't even know I could achieve. I was a part of one of the most elite institutions in comedy, and I am so grateful for it." She also playfully mentioned the need to keep shows phone-free, taking a jab at Dave Chappelle's phone policy during his performances.
Johnson originally joined "Saturday Night Live" as a featured player in 2020 and later transitioned to becoming a full-fledged cast member in the show's 48th season, which aired between 2022 and 2023. While SNL typically announces cast changes closer to the season premiere, news recently broke that Maya Rudolph will be portraying Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming 50th season.
Fans of Johnson and SNL alike will have to bid farewell to her comedic presence on the show when the landmark 50th season kicks off on September 28. Despite her departure, Johnson's impact on the esteemed comedy institution will not be forgotten, and her future endeavors in the industry will undoubtedly be eagerly anticipated.
