In a growing movement against Governor Ron DeSantis' proposed plans for the development of several Florida state parks, hundreds of concerned citizens have taken to the streets to voice their opposition. The controversy surrounds the governor's secretive plan to build three golf courses, two 350-room hotels, and various sport facilities within these protected areas.

The outcry from both Democrats and Republicans was swift and forceful, with advocates from multiple parties joining forces to condemn the proposal. Sign-waving protesters regularly gathered at Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Honeymoon Island State Park, and Anastasia State Park, making their opposition known.

The Department of Environmental Protection, under fire for their handling of the situation, was forced to delay their legally mandated public meetings due to the overwhelming turnout of angry crowds. In the midst of the growing discontent, the little-known nonprofits involved in the golf course development withdrew their proposal.

One of these nonprofits, the Tuskegee Dunes Foundation, posted on their newly created website, stating, "We did not fully comprehend the local community landscape and now appreciate the clarity. We have decided not to pursue building in the beloved Jonathan Dickinson State Park." However, this statement has been met with skepticism, as it contradicts earlier claims by State Senator Gayle Harrell who had warned them about the flaws in their plan.

The proposal aimed to pay tribute to the heroic African-American pilots and airmen known as the Tuskegee Airmen who fought in World War II. While honoring their legacy would have been commendable, concerns arose regarding the allocation of profits from the golf course venture. Tuskegee Dunes intended to donate their profits to the Folds of Honor organization for scholarships rather than to the families of the Tuskegee Airmen themselves.

Suspicions of ulterior motives have also arisen, with some fearing that the nonprofits were being used as a gateway for developers to acquire the land in the future. Similar situations have occurred in other states, raising concerns about the potential for exploitation and the evasion of public scrutiny.

Governor DeSantis initially attempted to distance himself from the controversy, claiming that he had never approved the plan and had no involvement in its development.
