**Progressive Democrats Criticize VP Kamala Harris’ Campaign Strategy with Liz Cheney**
Tensions are rising among progressive Democrats over Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision to collaborate with Liz Cheney in the final weeks leading up to the election. Critics within the party argue that Harris should prioritize engaging her Democratic base over reaching out to conservative Republicans.
During an interview with the Associated Press, Senator Bernie Sanders voiced his concern, emphasizing that there are significantly more working-class voters who could support Harris compared to conservative Republicans. Sanders, along with other progressive leaders like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has found his campaign role diminished, as Cheney, an anti-Trump Republican, assumes a more prominent position alongside Harris.
Sanders expressed his frustration, stating, "She has to start talking more to the needs of working-class people. I wish this had taken place two months ago. It is what it is." This sentiment was echoed by Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, who criticized the campaign's focus on Cheney, suggesting that it could demotivate the Democratic base without necessarily attracting swing voters.
Despite the strategic confusion, Green did commend Harris' campaign for its advertisements that address grocery prices and economic issues. However, Joseph Geevarghese, executive director of the progressive group Our Revolution, warned that up to 10% of progressives might abstain from voting for Harris or even consider voting for Trump. He urged the campaign not to take the progressive movement for granted and stressed the need for a strong economic argument to appeal to voters.
When questioned by Jake Tapper about Harris’ choice to campaign with Cheney instead of him, Sanders linked the decision to widespread dismay over Trump’s actions, including his attempts to disrupt the peaceful transition of power and undermining of American democracy. Although Sanders has campaigned for Harris, their appearances have been separate, underscoring the ongoing discord within the party.
As the election approaches, the Harris campaign has yet to address these criticisms directly, leaving the impact of her strategy on progressive voter turnout uncertain.
