In the wake of a dramatic law enforcement raid on a pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA, similar protests have sprung up and gained momentum at various universities throughout Southern California. As of Thursday afternoon, peaceful demonstrations were observed at UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach, and Chapman University.
According to the student-run newspaper, Daily 49er, protesters at Cal State Long Beach blocked the entrances to Brotman Hall fountain courtyard, demanding that the university divest from companies with ties to Israel. While a small number of pro-Israeli protesters arrived, there have been no reports of violence.
Meanwhile, UC Irvine's encampment remained intact with no signs of counter-protesters as dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators camped out on campus. The university has not provided any updates on whether police will be called to disperse the encampment.
Last week, the University of California made a statement firmly opposing boycotts and divestment from Israeli-associated businesses. According to the university, such actions impinge on academic freedom and hinder the unfettered exchange of ideas on campus.
At nearby Chapman University in Orange, a similar encampment has emerged, with approximately 50 students taking part. It remains to be seen how this protest will unfold in the coming days.
These demonstrations underscore the ongoing support for the Palestinian cause among students in Southern California. Despite the UCLA raid, the protests continue to highlight demands for divestment from companies linked to Israel and express solidarity with the Palestinian people.
While tensions may persist, it is important to note that as of 1 p.m. Thursday, the protests at UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach, and Chapman University have remained peaceful, creating a space for dialogue and the expression of divergent viewpoints.
