In a series of intense confrontations, pro-Palestinian demonstrators clashed with Chicago police outside the Israeli Consulate on Tuesday, less than 2 miles away from the United Center, where the Democratic National Convention is being held. According to The Associated Press, several protesters were arrested during the clashes.
The confrontations began shortly after the demonstration commenced, as a line of police officers blocked the protesters from marching. Many of the demonstrators, dressed in black with their faces covered, charged at the police, resulting in a heated standoff. Eventually, the protesters managed to bypass the officers, but were repeatedly confined by police in riot gear throughout the night, preventing them from dispersing.
The Israeli Consulate, located in a high-rise building above a public transit entrance, has been a frequent protest site for pro-Palestinian activists. Police have previously arrested demonstrators for obstructing the entrance to the rail line. Although the protests that led to arrests on Tuesday were relatively small compared to the thousands who marched near the United Center on Monday, they were nonetheless marked by tensions and clashes.
Today, another organized protest is scheduled to take place closer to the United Center at nearby Union Park. This park has been a meeting point for activists who have peacefully gathered almost every week since the conflict began in October.
The clashes between pro-Palestinian demonstrators and the police add to the string of protests that have accompanied the Democratic National Convention. As the convention proceeds, tensions remain high and activists continue to voice their grievances and demand justice for Palestine.
