Pro-Palestinian activists from the "uncommitted" movement are increasing the pressure on Vice President Kamala Harris to take a more decisive stand on the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Leaders of the movement are warning that Harris risks losing votes and important swing states if she does not advocate for an immediate and permanent cease-fire in Gaza, as well as an arms embargo against Israel - even though Harris does not support such measures.

During a press conference held this morning, Layla Elabed, a prominent leader of the "uncommitted" movement from Michigan, stated that Vice President Harris could face difficulties in securing key swing states like Michigan, where there is a significant population of Arab Americans and Muslim Americans. Elabed explained that these communities have firsthand experience of the devastating effects of American-funded bombings in Gaza. She further emphasized that the majority of Michigan voters cannot currently support Harris's race to the White House, as they believe stronger action is needed to address the situation.

The "uncommitted" leaders and delegates attending the convention see Vice President Harris as more flexible on the issue compared to President Joe Biden, and they intend to exert pressure on her during the convention. They argue that their demands for a cease-fire and an arms embargo are widely popular among the Democratic base, extending beyond the delegates at the convention.

Their efforts have already achieved some successes, as they have secured a panel discussion on Palestinian rights later today. However, their request for a Palestinian American speaker to address the convention from the main stage at the United Center has not been fulfilled so far.

The Democratic Party's platform reflects a commitment to a prompt and enduring cease-fire. However, it also emphasizes Biden's and Harris's unwavering support for Israel's security, including its right to defend itself and maintain a qualitative military edge. While Harris has advocated for a cease-fire in Gaza, she does not support an arms embargo.

Abbas Alawieh, another leader and delegate from Michigan, expressed the need for Vice President Harris to clearly state her plan to halt the flow of weapons to the Israeli military, which are being used in the killing of civilians. Alawieh emphasized that if they are to encourage uncommitted voters to support Harris, they need a clear and proactive message regarding her commitment to ending the supply of weapons.

As the convention unfolds, it remains to be seen how Vice President Harris will respond to the mounting pressure from pro-Palestinian activists. The "uncommitted" movement is determined to keep the issue at the forefront of discussions and ensure that their party's presidential nominee takes a bolder stance on the Gaza conflict.
