In a strong show of support for Vice President Kamala Harris, a pro-Harris campaign has begun to form, despite President Joe Biden and Harris' assertions that the ticket is not changing. The campaign, known as United for Harris, consists of alumni from Hillary Clinton's and Sen. Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaigns. The group aims to promote Harris as a potential candidate for the 2024 presidential race.
Drawing comparisons to the "Ready for Hillary" campaign that emerged prior to Clinton's official entry into the 2016 race, United for Harris seeks to rally supporters and provide them with an actionable outlet while waiting for the succession crisis to unfold. The campaign, however, is not authorized by Harris or her team, as they have been careful to avoid any actions that could be seen as disloyal to Biden.
The formation of this pro-Harris campaign comes at a time when Democrats are divided into three camps: those who support sticking with Biden, those who advocate for Harris as a replacement, and a group pushing for an open nominating process at the upcoming Democratic National Convention.
Supporters of Harris argue that she represents enough change to re-energize Democratic voters, while maintaining enough continuity from Biden's tenure to avoid potential divisiveness. The campaign's website states that taking a chance on Harris is preferable to sticking with a candidate viewed as doomed, especially considering recent polls showing Biden trailing former President Donald Trump.
United for Harris suggests that the excitement of an open convention could be retained through the jockeying for the vice presidential slot, which would need to be filled if Biden were to step aside in favor of Harris. Although Harris encountered issues with progressive voters during the 2020 Democratic primary, some progressives have re-evaluated their stance, with prominent figures like Sen. Elizabeth Warren expressing support for Harris as a unifying force within the party.
While Democratic Party rules make it highly unlikely to replace Biden unless he voluntarily steps aside, the party is still set to formally nominate him during a virtual roll call vote in early August. Biden's campaign has stated that he will resume campaigning after recovering from COVID-19.
As United for Harris gains momentum, it remains to be seen how the future of the presidential ticket will unfold. However, this grassroots campaign is making its presence known, setting the stage for a potential Harris run in 2024.
