President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19, the White House confirmed on Wednesday. Despite the diagnosis, the president is reportedly experiencing mild symptoms and will continue to carry out his duties from self-isolation in Delaware.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre assured the public that President Biden is fully vaccinated and boosted against the virus. She stated, "He will be returning to Delaware where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time." The White House also pledged to provide regular updates on the president's condition as he works remotely.
In a recent update on Thursday, President Biden's doctor reported that he does not have a fever, and his vital signs remain normal. The doctor previously disclosed that the president had mild upper respiratory symptoms, such as a runny nose and a non-productive cough, but his respiratory rate, temperature, and pulse oximetry were all within normal ranges.
Reportedly, the president initially felt fine during his event in Nevada but decided to get tested for COVID-19 after not experiencing any improvement. "I feel good," President Biden told reporters before leaving Las Vegas. In a social media post, he thanked well-wishers and expressed his determination to continue working for the American people while recovering.
To aid in his recovery, President Biden has begun treatment with Paxlovid, a medication used to combat COVID-19. This treatment, along with adhering to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommendation for respiratory virus patients, will support his healing process.
While it is currently unknown which specific variant of COVID-19 the president has contracted, recent projections indicate the prevalence of various variants across the United States. According to the CDC's estimates, the KP.3 variant accounted for more than one-third of infections nationwide, followed by the KP.2 and LB.1 variants. Together, these three variants constituted over 75% of infections in the country.
Aside from potential health complications, President Biden's COVID-19 diagnosis holds political implications. CBS News senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang pointed out that it comes at a challenging time for the president, as he juggles a demanding campaign schedule while focusing on his recovery from the virus.
In addition to President Biden, several key officials within his administration, including second gentleman Doug Emhoff and Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, have also tested positive for COVID-19 in recent weeks. However, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, who has been up-to-date on her vaccines, tested negative and remains asymptomatic.
The nation continues to face a summer surge of COVID-19 cases, with the CDC reporting that over half of the states are witnessing high or very high levels of the virus in wastewater testing. The president's diagnosis serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by the pandemic.
As President Biden continues to work remotely from self-isolation, the nation anxiously awaits updates on his condition and wishes him a speedy recovery.
