In a surprising development, President Biden is facing a significant decline in support in the traditionally Democrat-leaning state of New York, according to a recent report by Politico. This decline has caused Democrats to express concerns about the upcoming presidential elections in November, as the Republican Party aims to capture the state for the first time since 1984.

Despite securing a comfortable victory in New York by a margin of 23 points during the 2020 elections, President Biden is now experiencing what Politico describes as a "steady erosion" of support in the Empire State. Elected officials, union leaders, and political consultants, worried by the situation, have been urging the Biden team to allocate more resources to bolster his campaign and assist Democrats running in several swing districts that could determine control of the House.

Democratic Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine voiced his concerns, stating that New York is no longer a one-party state and should be considered a battleground. Private polls conducted in a swing district in New York revealed that former President Donald Trump is now virtually tied with President Biden, making the race tighter than expected. Public polls have also shown a narrow gap between the two candidates, a noteworthy outcome considering Democrats outnumber Republicans two to one in the state.

Amidst the growing concerns from Democrats, there have been calls for President Biden to focus more on New York and address the existential threat they believe a Trump presidency represents for democracy. However, devoting more time and resources to the state could potentially come at the cost of key swing states, where President Biden is believed to be vulnerable.

Former New York Governor David Paterson warned that investing in New York would mean diverting resources from other areas, which President Biden could potentially lose. Furthermore, there are fears that the President's increased presence in the state could overshadow local Democratic congressional candidates, who are advised to focus on building their own brand and campaigning independently.

The anxiety surrounding President Biden's declining support in New York has grown after Governor Kathy Hochul narrowly won her re-election bid in 2022, defeating Republican challenger Lee Zeldin by just six points. In comparison, four years earlier, then-Governor Andrew Cuomo secured a resounding victory over his Republican opponent, winning by a margin of 23 points.

While some Democrats remain confident that President Biden will ultimately prevail in New York, the recent developments have undoubtedly raised concerns among party members. With the state potentially turning into a battleground, the upcoming months leading to the presidential elections will prove crucial for both parties as they vie for support in one of the country's most politically significant states.
