President Biden's health is facing increased scrutiny as records show that a top neurologist specializing in Parkinson's disease met with his physician earlier this year. Dr. Kevin Cannard, a Parkinson's disease expert from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, had a meeting with Dr. Kevin O'Connor and two others at the White House residence clinic on January 17, according to White House records.
The meeting took place on the same day President Biden was at the White House, hosting House and Senate leaders to discuss Ukraine funding, as per the president's schedule. The meeting was attended by Dr. John E. Atwood, a cardiologist at Walter Reed, and a fourth person whose identity has not been disclosed.
White House visitor logs reveal that Dr. Cannard has visited the White House at least 10 times since 2022, primarily to provide medical services to the thousands of military personnel working on the grounds. When asked for comment, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates stated that a range of specialists from Walter Reed regularly visit the White House complex to attend to military personnel.
Dr. O'Connor, President Biden's personal physician, conducted a physical examination in February and confirmed that Biden was "fit to serve" as president. He stated that the 81-year-old president is a healthy and vigorous individual capable of successfully carrying out his presidential responsibilities. The physical examination included a neurological assessment that specifically ruled out Parkinson's disease.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre clarified that President Biden has not undergone any recent medical exams after the debate where he faced criticism for a halting and stumbling performance. She mentioned that any interaction between Biden and his physician was merely a "verbal check-in" to discuss a minor illness.
The revelation of the meeting between a Parkinson's disease expert and President Biden's physician has sparked further questions about his health and mental acuity. With the president's age being a focal point of concern, it is likely that scrutiny surrounding his overall well-being will persist.
As President Biden continues to navigate his presidency, it remains to be seen how his physical and mental health will be assessed and monitored in the public eye.
