In his inaugural commencement speech to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point as commander-in-chief, President Biden highlighted the multifaceted challenges confronting the military and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring global peace and stability. Speaking directly about ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, the President emphasized the immense responsibilities bestowed upon the U.S. military.
Addressing the newest officers of the Army, Biden extended his unwavering support to Ukraine and called for an immediate cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, with the crucial condition of the safe return of all hostages. The President expressed concern over the escalating conflicts led by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iran in their respective regions, condemning their actions.
Biden concluded his address by urging the graduating cadets to remain loyal to the oaths they took upon entering West Point, reminding them that their oath was not to a political party or a president but to the Constitution of the United States of America. The President's remarks emphasized the importance of remaining steadfast against both foreign and domestic threats to national security.
These remarks come at a time when U.S. foreign policy, particularly regarding Israel's war in Gaza, is under increased scrutiny. Recently, some students turned their backs on President Biden during his commencement speech at Morehouse College as a form of protest.
President Biden reiterated his support for Ukraine and highlighted the strength of NATO, confidently stating that Russia's military was no match for the alliance's full force. While committed to assisting Ukraine in training its soldiers on advanced weapons systems and tactical combat, Biden emphasized that deploying U.S. troops on the front lines was not part of the plan.
Regarding the Middle East, the President lauded U.S. efforts in food drop operations to Gaza and diplomatic engagements with Arab nations. Although he did not directly address Israel's war in Gaza, President Biden expressed support for an "immediate cease-fire that brings hostages home."
The President also touched upon the recent Iranian attacks against Israel and American interests. Biden commended the swift U.S. response in intercepting missiles and drones during Iran's assault. He also acknowledged the tragic loss of three American reservists and injuries to several other U.S. service members resulting from an unmanned drone attack in Jordan orchestrated by Iran-backed militants earlier this year. Promising justice for those who target American troops, President Biden vowed to hold those responsible accountable.
President Biden's commencement address at West Point emphasizes his administration's commitment to global stability and the protection of American interests. As the United States continues to navigate complex international conflicts, the President affirms his dedication to upholding the values enshrined in the Constitution while working towards a peaceful resolution.
