With gray skies overhead, Biden emphasized the importance of ensuring the sacrifices made by service members are not in vain.

Addressing the gathered audience, President Biden highlighted the ongoing battle between autocracy and democracy, stating that freedom has never been guaranteed and every generation must earn and defend it. He urged the nation to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom, democracy, opportunity, and equality, emphasizing that these ideals should be upheld for all individuals, not just a select few.

Prior to the ceremony, President Biden, along with Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, paying tribute to the unidentified fallen heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

During his speech, President Biden also took a moment to remember his son Beau Biden, who served in Iraq and tragically passed away from brain cancer, which the president attributes to his exposure to toxic burn pits. This served as a reminder of the importance of acknowledging and honoring the service of veterans who return home with injuries, in addition to remembering those who have lost their lives.

President Biden expressed gratitude for the progress made in providing better healthcare and benefits to veterans, citing the accomplishments of the PACT Act. This legislation grants automatic coverage for certain health conditions presumed to be a result of military service. The president credited the Act for the significant increase in benefits and claims processed by the VA, ensuring that veterans no longer have to fight for the care they have earned.

Earlier in the day, President Biden hosted a breakfast at the White House, bringing together administration officials, military leaders, veterans, and Gold Star family members, to honor their service and sacrifice.
