President Joe Biden is currently on day three of his isolation after testing positive for COVID-19 while on the campaign trail in Nevada. Despite facing mild symptoms, Biden has been receiving treatment and showing signs of improvement. However, calls for him to forgo the 2024 Democratic nomination have intensified, with 12 Democratic lawmakers joining the list on Friday alone.
The President's doctor, Dr. Kevin O'Connor, confirmed that Biden is still experiencing a loose, non-productive cough and hoarseness but assured that his symptoms are steadily improving. Biden completed his sixth dose of Paxlovid, a COVID treatment prescribed to him, earlier today.
Regarding the strain of the virus that the President has contracted, O'Connor revealed that it is the KP. 2.3 variant, which accounts for approximately a third of all new infections in the country, as noted by the CDC. This revelation reaffirms the prevalence and impact of this specific strain in the ongoing pandemic.
As Biden continues to prioritize his recovery, the calls for him to step aside from the 2024 Democratic nomination have gained momentum. While these demands initially subsided following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, they resurfaced after the Republican National Convention concluded.
Notably, 12 Democratic legislators joined the chorus on Friday, with Rep. Takano (D-Calif.) being the latest to make a statement on Saturday. Reports have also emerged suggesting that major campaign donors are threatening to withhold planned donations if Biden continues with his presidential campaign.
As the President's isolation continues, there is no official announcement yet regarding when he plans to make his public return. However, it is expected that he will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later this week when Netanyahu travels to address a joint session of Congress on Wednesday. The Biden camp maintains that the President's health remains a top priority.
The nation eagerly awaits updates on President Biden's recovery and his next steps, as political divisions within the Democratic party persist, and the ongoing pandemic continues to pose challenges for the nation.
