The elder Biden alleged that if he weren't running for re-election, Hunter would have received a plea deal, according to a report from Politico.

Hunter Biden, 54, was found guilty by a jury on three charges related to lying about his crack cocaine addiction in order to obtain a firearm back in October 2018. Although he could face up to 25 years in prison, a lighter penalty is more likely. No sentencing date has been set as of yet.

Last year, it appeared that Hunter would avoid prison time when prosecutors led by Delaware US Attorney David Weiss had negotiated a probation-only plea agreement. Under this deal, he would have faced two years of probation for tax crimes while agreeing not to own a firearm and remaining drug-free for at least two years.

However, complications arose during a hearing in July 2023 when US District Judge Maryellen Noreika questioned the extent of Hunter's immunity within the agreement. As a result, Weiss' team decided to charge Hunter separately for the tax and firearm allegations. The tax trial is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles on September 5th.

Despite the guilty verdict, Hunter appeared relatively unfazed, even nodding his head when the final "guilty" verdict was read. The first lady, Jill Biden, who had been present in the courtroom throughout the trial, unfortunately arrived too late to hear the verdict.

In a statement released after the conviction, President Biden expressed his love and support for his son, praising him for overcoming his addiction struggles. He also acknowledged the outcome of the case and vowed to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal. Interestingly, the President had previously stated that he would not pardon his son.

As the news of Hunter's conviction broke, President Biden attended Everytown for Gun Safety's annual conference in Washington, where he emphasized the importance of holding families accountable for safely storing their firearms. The timing of his remarks was seen by some as ironic given his son's recent legal situation.

The President's claims of politics influencing his son's case echo former President Donald Trump's accusations of "election interference" in his own criminal cases. President Biden, however, has firmly dismissed these claims by his rival as "reckless," "dangerous," and "irresponsible."

As the legal proceedings continue, the Biden family remains united in their support for Hunter, with the President affirming that he and Jill will always be there for their son and the rest of their family. The outcome of Hunter's appeal and the upcoming tax trial will undoubtedly have significant implications for President Biden and his administration.
