In an Oval Office address scheduled for Wednesday night, President Joe Biden will speak about his recent decision not to seek reelection for a second term in office. This will be the first time he addresses the subject since his announcement on Sunday.

"I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation," President Biden is expected to say, as per an excerpt released by the White House. "That is the best way to unite our nation."

For the remaining six months of his term, President Biden has expressed his commitment to focusing on the responsibilities of the presidency. He intends to continue his efforts to lower costs for hard-working families and stimulate economic growth. Additionally, he will emphasize his determination to defend personal freedoms and civil rights, including the right to vote and the right to choose.

In the address, President Biden will emphasize the importance of democracy and remind Americans that they hold the power to shape the nation's destiny. He will reiterate his belief that the defense of democracy is more vital than any title.

Since his announcement, Vice President Kamala Harris has garnered the support of a majority of Democratic delegates after President Biden endorsed her for the nomination. Although President Biden cannot appoint a successor for the Democratic nomination, he has wholeheartedly backed Harris's campaign.

The president, who has been recovering from COVID-19 symptoms at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, has been relatively silent since his decision. The White House confirmed that he recently tested negative for the virus, but the exact timing of the test remains unknown. President Biden assured reporters on Tuesday that he is feeling well.

During his Oval Office address, President Biden is expected to outline his plans for the final six months of his presidency. Lowering costs for families, boosting the economy, and defending personal freedoms and civil rights will be among his priorities.

Notably, Oval Office addresses are rare for President Biden. Prior to last week, he had only delivered two such addresses during his three-and-a-half years in office. The upcoming address and any speeches at the Democratic National Convention next month will be crucial moments in defining President Biden's legacy throughout his more than five decades of public service.

Although President Biden will continue to participate in the campaign, stepping down from the Democratic ticket allows him to focus more intensely on the responsibilities of the presidency, freeing him from the physically demanding campaign trail.

"I'm not going anywhere," President Biden assured his campaign staff, who have transitioned to working for Vice President Harris. He affirmed his commitment to supporting Harris's campaign and working tirelessly as a sitting president to pass legislation and engage in campaigning activities.

The forthcoming Oval Office address will not only mark a pivotal moment in President Biden's presidency but also contribute to shaping his enduring legacy as he concludes his extensive career in public service.
