In a rare and lighthearted event, Pope Francis welcomed over 100 comedians from around the world to the Vatican on Friday. The gathering aimed to promote laughter and spread joy, with renowned names like Chris Rock, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in attendance.

The comedy event took place in the heart of Rome, providing an opportunity for the comedic talents to connect with the Catholic leader and share their craft. Pope Francis, who has recently faced criticism for his remarks, appeared on his best behavior during the gathering, avoiding any offensive language.

Addressing the crowd of humorists, the Pope emphasized the power of laughter in uniting people. He expressed that humor can extend even to religious topics without disrespecting believers' feelings. The comedians, comprised of individuals from 15 different countries, were lauded by the Pope for their ability to bring light into the world amidst challenging times.

Among the attendees was Conan O'Brien, who humorously acknowledged the language barrier as the Pope spoke in Italian. O'Brien, known for his Catholic upbringing, shared his appreciation for the opportunity to hear the Pope's remarks.

The gathering showcased a diverse range of comedians, including "Sister Act" star Whoopi Goldberg, who does not come from a Catholic background. However, they were all united by their shared passion for making people laugh.

During his address, Pope Francis commended the comedians for their ability to shed light on important issues, denounce abuses of power, and raise awareness of forgotten situations. He acknowledged the valuable role they play in society, particularly in times filled with negative news and gloom.

Pope Francis, who has been navigating delicate ground in terms of LGBTQ+ acceptance within the Catholic Church, put aside his recent use of homophobic slurs during the comedy event. This behavior showcases his efforts to create a more inclusive environment while carefully managing conservative elements within the institution.

After the gathering, Pope Francis traveled to Puglia, Italy, where he joined world leaders, including the Catholic U.S. President Joe Biden, at the G7 summit. The Pope's participation in both lighthearted and serious international events demonstrates his commitment to fostering dialogue and engaging with a wide range of global issues.
