Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker has ignited speculation after releasing a video urging Americans to support Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro "for vice president." The video, which was posted on Mayor Parker's personal social media accounts, called for Pennsylvanians to back "Kamala Harris for president" and Shapiro as her running mate. This unexpected endorsement has led to intense speculation that Harris' pick for a running mate had been leaked.
While the video has caused a frenzy on social media, with many questioning whether the mayor accidentally revealed Harris' running mate, it remains available as of Saturday morning and no official comments have been made. The Independent has reached out to both the Harris campaign and Mayor Parker's office for clarification on the matter.
However, despite the excitement generated by the video, it has been revealed that Mayor Parker was simply expressing her support for Shapiro as a long-time ally and friend who could potentially join Harris on the Democratic ticket. Shapiro is reportedly on Harris' shortlist for vice president, alongside other prominent figures such as Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
Clues in the past week have hinted at Harris potentially focusing on Shapiro as her running mate. Notably, Harris is expected to hold her first rally with her vice presidential pick on Tuesday in Pennsylvania, which is Shapiro's home state. It is anticipated that Harris will make her official announcement before then.
Further fueling speculation that Governor Shapiro will join Harris' ticket, he has canceled his fundraising events in New York that were originally scheduled for this weekend. According to his press secretary, the governor's change in plans is due to his schedule being altered.
While Shapiro's potential candidacy gains traction, the National Women's Defense League (NWDL) has called for the Harris campaign to drop him as a contender due to a sexual harassment claim against one of his aides. The claim, which involved Shapiro aide Mike Vereb, was settled for $300,000. Vereb resigned a few weeks after the settlement was arranged, according to reports.
The NWDL expressed concern over the handling of sexual harassment complaints within the Pennsylvania Governor's office and urged the Harris campaign to carefully consider this aspect. It remains to be seen how this issue could impact Shapiro's chances of securing the vice presidential nomination.
Friday marked a historic moment for Harris, as she officially secured the Democratic presidential nomination, becoming the first Black woman and Asian American to lead a major political party. In her statement, Harris acknowledged the instrumental role played by delegates, state leaders, and campaign staff in making this achievement possible.
As anticipation builds for Harris' official running mate announcement and the Pennsylvania rally, political observers will closely watch for any further developments that could shed light on the potential vice presidential candidate, including Governor Shapiro's future involvement in the campaign.
