U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg's recent interview on Fox News has generated significant attention on social media. During the interview, Buttigieg discussed key issues such as immigration and crime, criticizing the Republican National Convention's (RNC) messaging on the supposed link between the two.
Speaking with anchor Shannon Bream, Buttigieg disputed the RNC's claim that immigration leads to an increase in crime. He pointed out that while there may be isolated incidents, overall crime rates have actually decreased under President Joe Biden, while they were on the rise during former President Donald Trump's tenure.
Buttigieg encouraged viewers to look at the data themselves, highlighting that there have been 2,222,770 encounters with migrants in the current fiscal year, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data. He also highlighted research indicating that immigrants commit fewer crimes than U.S.-born individuals, referencing studies conducted by economist Ran Abramitzky from Stanford University and investigations by The New York Times and The Marshall Project.
The interview attracted widespread praise on social media, with Ammar Moussa, the director of rapid response for Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign, describing it as a "masterclass" from Buttigieg. Democratic strategist Lis Smith emphasized the importance of Democrats engaging with Fox News, while others praised Buttigieg's communication skills.
This is not the first time Buttigieg has clashed with Fox News. He shut down host Bret Baier earlier this year when he was questioned about bringing his husband on a military flight. Buttigieg pointed out that other officials' spouses had accompanied them on similar trips without facing scrutiny.
In the meantime, Buttigieg, along with other top Democrats being considered for Vice President Harris' running mate, have until August 7th to be chosen, according to Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Jamie Harrison. The selection process is expected to be completed by that date to ensure the nominee appears on all 50 state ballots.
