In an exclusive interview with The Post, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman voiced his strong opposition to the idea of "squatter's rights." Fetterman, who has encountered this issue during his time as mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, firmly stated that squatters have no rights, emphasizing that their actions are simply illegal.
Fetterman challenged the notion that individuals who break into someone's home and reside there for a certain period of time should be granted any kind of legal protection. He compared it to stealing a car and holding it for 30 days, asserting that it does not make sense for the perpetrator to acquire any rights in such cases.
Furthermore, Fetterman criticized what he referred to as "soft-on-crime" policies that he believes contributed to the tragic shooting of NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller. Expressing his unwavering support for law enforcement, Fetterman called for severe punishment for individuals convicted of such heinous crimes. He stated that those responsible should spend the rest of their lives in prison, without the possibility of parole.
While advocating for second chances, Fetterman stressed that repeat offenders should face accountability for their actions. He argued that providing numerous chances to those who continually offend serves no larger purpose or societal benefit. Fetterman's strong stance on crime has drawn accusations of being soft on the issue, but he remained resolute in the need for intelligent and aggressive crime-fighting strategies.
During the interview, Fetterman also addressed a range of topics, including his support for Israel and his opinion on the 2024 presidential campaign. He criticized Democratic politicians moving closer to Hamas and reasserted his firm backing of Israel as a key democratic ally. Fetterman disagreed with Senator Chuck Schumer's call for new elections in Israel, asserting that it was unnecessary foreign interference in a sovereign nation's affairs.
Fetterman expressed concern over the United States allowing a United Nations ceasefire resolution to pass in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. He defended Israel's right and deemed it imperative for them to proceed with their invasion of Rafah. Additionally, Fetterman objected to President Biden's indication that future aid to Israel could be conditional, stating that Israel should receive unconditional support in its fight against Hamas.
Despite his maverick streak, Fetterman reiterated his loyalty to the Democratic Party and his commitment to securing a second term for President Biden. Acknowledging that recent polls show Biden trailing former President Trump in key swing states, including Pennsylvania, Fetterman expressed confidence in Biden's ultimate triumph. He intends to serve as a surrogate for the President in Pennsylvania, advocating for his reelection.
Currently in New York City for media appearances and fundraising activities, Fetterman's unwavering support for America's democratic allies, such as Ukraine and Israel, has been commended by Alexander Vindman, a member of the RDI board.
Senator Fetterman's strong stance on law and order, along with his firm support for democratic values, has garnered attention and will likely shape his continued political trajectory.
