In a recent interview on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports," former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called upon both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump to disclose their physical and mental health test results to the American public.
Pelosi, who remains a prominent member of the House Democratic Caucus, stated that both candidates owe it to the public to undergo tests regarding their mental acuity and overall health. She emphasized that it is a legitimate question to ask whether Biden's poor performance at the recent debate was just an episode or a more concerning condition.
During the debate, Biden appeared to lose his train of thought and stumbled over his words multiple times, leading to widespread speculation about his ability to serve as the Democratic presidential nominee. At 81 years old, Biden acknowledged at a subsequent event that he has gotten older and does not debate as well as he used to, but he asserted his readiness for the job.
Similarly, Trump, age 78, has faced questions about his mental fitness. Earlier this year, he mixed up Pelosi with former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and some business executives who met with him in Washington, D.C., last month said that he was "remarkably meandering" and struggled to maintain coherent thoughts.
While Pelosi expressed that she has heard mixed messages from elected Democrats regarding Biden's continued candidacy, she stated that it is ultimately up to Biden to decide whether he should remain in the race. She described Biden as a person of vision, knowledge, judgment, and integrity, contrasting him with Trump.
Despite Pelosi's call for health transparency, she admitted that she is not a doctor and cannot predict the future. However, based on her experience, she believes Biden will continue to be a great president. In order to address concerns, Pelosi recommended that Biden sit down for unscripted interviews with serious journalists, where any question is fair game, to show the American people who he truly is.
Pelosi also mentioned that she has not spoken to Biden since the debate, and Rep. James Clyburn, a close Biden ally, confirmed the same. The White House last released Biden's health information in February 2023, which stated that he was a healthy and fit 80-year-old male, without any cognitive issues. Similarly, Trump's doctor released a letter in November 2023 stating that the former president was in excellent physical and mental health, although no further details were provided.
As the presidential race continues, the call for transparency in the candidates' health remains an important consideration for voters who want a president that is physically and mentally capable of leading the country effectively.
