In a recent interview with MSNBC, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi staunchly defended Minnesota Governor Tim Walz against attacks on his military service record, labeling the accusations as "stolen valor" and a reflection of the bankruptcy of ideas from Republicans. Pelosi dismissed the claims, asserting that they were fabricated due to the lack of substantive arguments from Walz's opponents.

Highlighting Walz's accomplishments, Pelosi emphasized that he was respected by his colleagues when he served in Congress and was elected as the top Democrat on the Veterans Affairs Committee. During his tenure, Walz made significant strides in meeting the needs of veterans, surpassing the achievements made since World War II's G.I. Bill.

However, the resurfacing of allegations that Walz inflated his military credentials has become a recurring theme in his political career. As the most senior enlisted soldier to serve in Congress, Walz faced similar attacks during previous gubernatorial and House races. The recent scrutiny has been magnified by Ohio Senator JD Vance, a combat correspondent in the Marines, and the Trump campaign.

The primary accusation revolves around claims that Walz retired before his unit received a mobilization order to avoid deployment to Iraq. Pelosi swiftly dispelled this claim, pointing out that Walz retired months prior to the issuance of the order. Despite these facts, opponents continue to question Walz's military record.

When asked about how the Harris-Walz campaign should handle the criticisms, Pelosi advised simply dismissing them, as they were based on lies and falsehoods. She stressed the importance of countering misrepresentations with factual information to prevent their persistence.

The Harris campaign has made a minor adjustment to Walz's online biography amid the questions surrounding his military service. The reference to him as a "retired command sergeant major" has been revised to highlight that he once held the rank, but retired as a master sergeant. This change accurately reflects his position at retirement from the National Guard.

Additionally, the campaign clarified remarks made by Walz in 2018 regarding weapons he carried in war. While Walz did not serve in a combat zone, his spokesperson, Lauren Hitt, confirmed that he has handled weapons of war, seemingly correcting any misinterpretation of his statement.

Senator Tom Cotton, who sits on the Armed Services Committee and has served in the Army for almost five years, acknowledged his respect for Walz's service but pointed to past inconsistent statements about his service. This statement adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing discussion surrounding Walz's military background.

As the campaign for the gubernatorial runoff intensifies, it remains to be seen how these allegations will impact Walz's standing among voters. However, with the firm support and defense from influential figures like Nancy Pelosi and the clarification of his military record, Walz aims to counteract the attacks and focus on his plans for Minnesota's future.
