In an eventful practice at Nitschke Field, the Green Bay Packers faced an injury scare and welcomed a new addition to their kicking competition. Here are the key highlights from Wednesday's session:
Christian Watson Survives Injury Scare:
During the two-minute drill with the No. 1 offense, wide receiver Christian Watson and rookie safety Evan Williams contested Jordan Love's pass in the back of the end zone. Williams made an impressive interception, but the play took a worrying turn when Watson stayed down on the ground for several minutes. Fortunately, Watson confirmed it was just a bruise and does not expect to miss any practice time or Saturday's preseason opener against Cleveland.
Javon Bullard, Versatile Rookie:
Rookie safety Javon Bullard, who is vying for the starting safety spot, showcased his versatility by getting extra reps as a slot corner with the No. 2 defense. Bullard's ability to play both positions in college at Georgia has been a factor in the Packers' decision to draft him in the second round. If he continues to excel in the slot, it could provide defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley with more options for sub-packages.
Injury Sidelines Jordan Morgan:
Right guard Jordan Morgan, who had been gaining traction with the No. 1 offensive line, suffered a shoulder injury and will be out for approximately a week. Head Coach Matt LaFleur reassured that the injury seems short-term, and Morgan's availability for Week 1 is not in jeopardy. In Morgan's absence, third-year pro Sean Rhyan will step in as the starting right guard, eager to display his marked improvement since last season.
A New Kicker Enters the Competition:
Adding to the ongoing kicking competition, undrafted rookie Alex Hale from Oklahoma State entered the fray. Hale's journey from being a soccer player in Australia to pursuing American football has motivated him to excel in the sport. Signed by the Packers after a workout, Hale showcased his skills by going 5-for-6 in field goals during his first practice with the team. The competition now includes Hale alongside Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph.
Updates on the Injury List:
Wide receiver Jayden Reed missed Wednesday's practice due to a calf injury, adding to the Packers' injury concerns. However, there was positive news as defensive lineman Kingsley Enagbare returned from a hamstring injury that had kept him out of previous sessions. Linebacker Quay Walker also rejoined the team after sitting out a couple of recent practice periods, with no specific injury disclosed.
Several players continue to be sidelined as well, including Dimitri Stanley, Carrington Valentine, Deslin Alexandre, Keshawn Banks, Edgerrin Cooper, and Donovan Jennings.
In a challenging training camp, the Packers are navigating through injuries while also assessing players' performances as they prepare for the preseason opener against the Browns on Saturday. The team remains hopeful that the injury situations will resolve quickly, allowing them to focus on solidifying their roster for the upcoming season.
