The Green Bay Packers have enlisted Robert Saleh, former head coach of the New York Jets, in a flexible consulting role aimed at enhancing their offense with a defensive perspective. Saleh was spotted at the Packers' practice on Wednesday, as the team kicked off their on-field preparations for an upcoming match against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Matt LaFleur articulated the benefits of this decision, noting the unique insights Saleh can offer.

"I thought it was a good idea to bring him here. He's helping us on the offensive side of the ball," LaFleur remarked on Wednesday. "I think that's always a good deal to have that defensive perspective on that side of the ball. Just taking a look at some of the things we're doing."

Saleh will be with the Packers through Thursday before heading back home on Friday. LaFleur emphasized the temporary and supportive nature of Saleh's role, which mirrors the approach taken last season with former NFL defensive back Aubrey Pleasant in a similar consulting capacity for the offense. LaFleur lauded Saleh, describing him as an "elite defensive mind" who can significantly aid the Packers in strategizing against opposing defenses.

"It's a good opportunity for him to learn and also for him to help us and give us perspective on how teams might see us, might defend us," LaFleur said. "Certainly, can find holes or vulnerabilities in the defense that we're playing. That's how we're going to use him."

LaFleur clarified that Saleh's consulting would focus solely on the offense, reassuring that the defensive responsibilities remain securely under the guidance of first-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. Hafley and Saleh share a professional history, having previously collaborated in San Francisco.

"Haf and our defensive staff have a great thing going," LaFleur affirmed.

Saleh's extensive experience includes a four-year tenure as the 49ers' defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, followed by four seasons as head coach of the Jets. Remarkably, Saleh's defenses have consistently ranked in the top 10 for yards allowed in five of the last six seasons. The professional and personal relationship between LaFleur and Saleh, which dates back to their days on the same coaching staff at Central Michigan in the early 2000s and continued at the Houston Texans, reinforces the trust and camaraderie underlying this collaboration. LaFleur was notably the best man at Saleh’s wedding, signaling a deep bond beyond the professional arena.
