In a significant show of bipartisan support, more than 100 Republican former national security and foreign policy officials have come forward to endorse Democratic nominee Kamala Harris for president. In a joint letter, these influential figures, who have served in administrations spanning both Republican and Democratic presidencies, declared that President Donald Trump is "unfit to serve" another term in the White House.
The endorsements come from a wide range of former officials who served under Republican presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and even Trump himself, as well as Democrats Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Notably, the letter also garnered support from several former GOP members of Congress.
Emphasizing the importance of having a principled, serious, and steady leader as the president of the United States, the letter acknowledged that while there may be disagreements with Harris on various domestic and foreign policy issues, she possesses the essential qualities needed for the role, unlike Trump.
Key signees of the letter include former defense secretaries William Cohen and Chuck Hagel, who served in the Clinton and Obama administrations respectively. The list also includes distinguished figures such as William Webster, former CIA and FBI director under Reagan and the first Bush administration, and Michael Hayden, former CIA and NSA director under the younger Bush and Obama administrations.
The letter condemned Trump's chaotic leadership, praising of adversaries, undermining of allies, politicization of the military, and disparagement of veterans. It further criticized his prioritization of personal interest over American interests and accused him of betraying democratic values and the founding document of the country.
The former officials specifically pointed to Trump's involvement in the January 6th insurrection at the US Capitol, his susceptibility to flattery and manipulation by authoritarian leaders like Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, and his erratic decision-making in matters of national security. They unequivocally stated that Trump is unfit to serve as president or in any office of public trust.
The influential group also highlighted Harris's support for NATO and Israel, as well as her commitment to signing a bipartisan border security package that Republicans previously blocked. Additionally, her pledge to appoint a Republican to her administration further solidified their endorsement.
Notably, the letter received support from multiple former officials who served under the Trump administration, such as Mark Harvey, a former special assistant to the president, and Elizabeth Neumann, a former assistant secretary of Homeland Security.
In recent weeks, several Republicans, including former Virginia representative Barbara Comstock, have crossed party lines to endorse Harris. Comstock explained her decision, reasoning that after Trump's refusal to acknowledge his loss in the 2020 election and his threats against democracy, it was crucial to "turn the page."
Other Republicans who have endorsed Harris include Alberto Gonzales, a Republican attorney general who served under President George W. Bush, former Illinois representative Adam Kinzinger, as well as Trump's former press secretary Stephanie Grisham and communications director Anthony Scaramucci.
These endorsements from prominent Republican national security officials speak to the increasing crossover of party lines in the upcoming election. As the November election draws closer, the support for Harris among these Republican officials highlights the urgency for a change in leadership and a call for unity in the face of numerous national challenges.
