State Attorney Andrew Bain made the announcement on Monday, detailing that Edgar faces two second-degree murder charges and one count of attempted murder. The decision came amid the possibility that a grand jury could elevate these charges to first-degree murder.
State Attorney Bain emphasized that the decision was made after a thorough review of the evidence. Edgar is accused of recklessly opening fire into a crowd of 75,000 celebrants early last Friday, causing chaos and wounding multiple individuals. Among the injured was a woman who was trampled as terrified attendees fled the scene. It was also revealed that one of the deceased and one of the injured were students at the University of Central Florida.
Edgar was apprehended at the scene by police officers who were patrolling the area. The prosecutor cited "the brazen nature of the crime" and the high number of casualties as key factors in deciding to charge Edgar as an adult. "This was a blatant execution in the middle of our streets," Bain remarked during a news conference, stressing the community's need for justice.
Details regarding Edgar's legal representation remain unclear, as there was no court docket available. The Orange County Public Defender's office has yet to respond to inquiries. Bain withheld information about a possible motive and how Edgar obtained the firearm, noting that investigations are ongoing.
The Halloween event, one of Orlando’s largest annual gatherings, was marred by the tragedy, drawing increased scrutiny and leading Mayor Buddy Dyer to declare a local state of emergency. The emergency order, which will last a week, enforces an earlier cutoff for alcohol sales and imposes a curfew from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. In previous years, weapons screening was part of the street closures, but these measures were relaxed after the enactment of a permit-less concealed carry law in 2023.
