The allegations reveal that Do funneled COVID-19 relief funds into Viet America Society (VAS), a nonprofit organization where his daughter, Rhiannon Do, served as an executive.
Investigations conducted by LAist and other media outlets uncovered that VAS had received millions of dollars from the county. These funds were suspiciously linked to the purchase of a million-dollar home by Rhiannon Do, who is only 23 years old. Despite the gravity of the situation, Do's brief resignation letter lacked any reference to the scandal, stating only that his resignation is effective immediately.
The reaction from Do’s colleagues was swift and severe. Supervisor Katrina Foley from the 5th District condemned Do’s actions in a strongly-worded statement. Foley lamented that what once could have been "an example of what the American Dream can achieve" has become an "American Nightmare" due to Do’s corrupt actions, which have also implicated his family and associates.
"I am disgusted by the staggering level of corruption, greed, and deception described in the federal indictments," Foley said. "Andrew Do and his associates carried out an overt scheme to enrich themselves off our hard-earned tax dollars. Our tax dollars are not monopoly money for powerful elected officials to use to enrich themselves and blatantly defraud our government. Andrew Do and his enablers must pay the price for their crimes against the people of Orange County."
Do has entered a guilty plea to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery concerning programs receiving federal funds, a crime that carries a potential sentence of up to five years in federal prison.
