In a surprising turn of events, Ohio State football has managed to retain the majority of its roster in the recent spring transfer window, solidifying its position as a championship contender for the upcoming 2024 season. The Buckeyes' ability to keep their key players intact reflects the program's dedication to building a strong team culture that players are eager to be a part of.

During the 15-day post-spring transfer window, Ohio State saw only six backup players enter the transfer portal: running back Dallan Hayden, wide receiver Kyion Grayes, guard Enokk Vimahi, linebacker Nigel Glover, and safeties Ja'Had Carter and Cedrick Hawkins. While the departure of running back Hayden was a loss for the team, the depth at the position remains strong with TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins leading the way.

Losing two safeties does leave the Buckeyes thin in that position, with only six scholarship players remaining. However, neither Carter nor Hawkins were expected to have significant playing time for the team this year. Furthermore, Vimahi's performance in the Cotton Bowl indicated that he would not be a viable starting option, meaning his departure does not significantly impact the team's offensive line.

Ohio State's successful retention of key players is seen as a testament to the program's efforts to create a sense of brotherhood and a shared purpose among its players. Head coach Ryan Day emphasized the importance of playing for the team and understanding the opportunity that lies ahead.

Looking ahead, Ohio State still has the opportunity to add transfers, as players who have already entered the portal can still transfer to new schools. The team has five scholarships available and could potentially target offensive linemen, safeties, or a veteran running back for additional depth.

While the lack of major moves in the post-spring transfer window has not been exclusive to Ohio State, it is a positive outcome for the Buckeyes. Many top talents across college football chose to stay with their respective teams, dispelling fears of significant roster shake-ups among the top programs. Ohio State's retention of its roster solidifies its standing as one of the deepest and most talented teams in college football for the 2024 season.

As the transfer portal closes for the year, Ohio State gears up to face the challenge of an extended season with potentially 16 or 17 games if they make a run to the national championship. Coach Day acknowledges the need for a deep roster and emphasizes the importance of utilizing players in the first half of the season to preserve strength for the later stages.

With the majority of their key players still on the roster, Ohio State is on track to field a championship-caliber team this year. While there may still be additions to the roster in the future, the Buckeyes have already accomplished their most crucial objective in managing their roster for the upcoming season.
