In a setback for the Ohio State Buckeyes, the team will be without two key starters on both sides of the ball when they face off against Akron this Saturday. Middle linebacker Cody Simon and left guard Donovan Jackson, both veterans in their positions, have been ruled out for the game, according to the Buckeyes' status report.

The absence of Simon and Jackson leaves Ohio State with some big shoes to fill, but they still possess plenty of firepower to overpower Akron, a MAC team that struggled last season with a 2-10 record. However, the Buckeyes will certainly be hoping for a clean bill of health in the future, as both players are considered leaders both on and off the field.

Backup safety Jayden Bonsu is another player who will be sidelined for the upcoming game. Additionally, running back TC Caffey has sadly been ruled out for the entire season due to a knee injury, leaving Ohio State with a thinning depth chart at the position.

Donovan Jackson, a two-time first-team All-Big Ten performer, will see his impressive streak of 26 consecutive starts come to an end. The absence of Jackson will put the team's guard depth to the test. It is expected that Tegra Tshabola will start at right guard, while redshirt sophomore Carson Hinzman, last year's starting center, has a chance to fill in at left guard in Jackson's place. Redshirt freshman Austin Siereveld is also in contention for playing time.

On the defensive end, Cody Simon's absence will undoubtedly be felt. Simon, who was a standout player with 57 tackles in just five games last season, is considered the backbone of Ohio State's defense. The team captain and recipient of Ohio State's esteemed "Block O" Jersey for 2024, Simon is known for his leadership and ability to call defensive plays. His absence could lead to adjustments in the linebacker lineup, with Gabe Powers and Arvell Reese vying for the backup role. There is also consideration to move Sonny Styles to the middle linebacker position while allowing C.J. Hicks to make his first career start at Will linebacker.

Despite these challenges, Ohio State remains focused on their season opener against Akron, which kicks off at 3:30 p.m. CBS will televise the game, and fans will be eagerly watching to see how the Buckeyes adapt to the absence of Simon and Jackson. The team's depth and talented roster should provide them with the confidence to overcome these early setbacks and start their season on the right foot.
