An Ohio man's claim of being unaware that a tire from his truck may have caused a fatal accident was shattered by a year-old jailhouse phone call that emerged during the investigation, according to police reports. The incident in question occurred on July 16, 2023, when Lauren Collins, an 18-year-old fashion merchandising student at the University of Kentucky, lost her life after a runaway tire crashed through her windshield on I-75 near the Ohio border.
The Boone County Sheriff's Office revealed that six days after the tragic crash, 37-year-old Ricky A. Raider voluntarily approached the Independence Police Department. However, Raider stated that he had lost a tire on the interstate but didn't believe it had hit anyone. Authorities had initially taken his statements at face value, but a previously unnoticed recording of a phone call between Raider and a fellow inmate at the Bullitt County Detention Center altered the situation.
Sergeant Jeff Nagy, from the Independence Police Department's Accident Reconstruction Unit, obtained the phone call recording. The conversation between Raider and the female inmate contradicted his previous claims and painted a different account of the accident. According to the Boone County Sheriff's Office, Raider admitted to witnessing the tire collide with Lauren Collins' vehicle and stated that he knew the collision had likely resulted in serious harm or even death. Raider confessed that he retrieved the tire, fixed it back onto his truck, stole lug nuts from other wheels to secure it, and then hastily left the scene.
Maj. Philip Ridgell, representing the Boone County Sheriff's Office, stated to Fox 19 that Raider's actions were an attempt to remove the evidence from the interstate and continue driving. However, his dishonesty was revealed through the jailhouse phone call, which provided critical evidence for possible criminal prosecution.
Facing the consequences of his actions, Ricky A. Raider was indicted on charges of leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid with death or serious physical injury. He also faced one count of being a persistent felony offender, and on June 4, he was booked into Boone County Jail with a $40,000 bond. At his court appearance on Wednesday, Raider requested a public defender, as reported by Fox 19. His next court date is scheduled for July 24.
The phone call recording has brought a significant turning point in the case, exposing the truth behind Raider's knowledge of the accident. The newfound evidence strengthens the prosecution's case against him, highlighting the importance of accountability for drivers involved in fatal accidents. As this case moves forward through the legal system, the memory of Lauren Collins will remain alive, reminding us of the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences of negligence.
