In a recent opinion piece published in the New York Times, Republican governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine, criticized former US president Donald Trump and his election running mate, JD Vance, for endorsing baseless and racially charged conspiracy theories about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. The unsubstantiated claims, including allegations of Haitian immigrants eating residents' pets, have sparked a wave of threats and harassment towards the immigrant community in the city.

Governor DeWine expressed disappointment that Springfield has become a focal point for misinformation and hostility towards legal migrants. While acknowledging the importance of addressing border control issues, DeWine condemned Trump and Vance for their inflammatory rhetoric against Haitian immigrants who are lawfully present in the United States. He highlighted that their verbal attacks detract from legitimate discussions on immigration policy and create a hostile environment for those residing in Springfield.

Some Ohio Democrats have shown support for Governor DeWine's stance against the discriminatory narrative targeting Haitian immigrants. State representative Allison Russo praised DeWine's essay for shedding light on the hard work and contributions of Haitian immigrants towards building a future in Springfield. However, state senate leader Nickie Antonio expressed disappointment that DeWine continues to back Trump and Vance for the upcoming presidential election in 2024, criticizing their perpetuation of harmful stereotypes and encouragement of discrimination. Antonio emphasized the need for prioritizing decency and the common good over political affiliations in addressing such divisive issues.
