In a significant development, Oakland Democratic Mayor Sheng Thao will be facing a recall on November's ballot, following the submission of a petition by community organizers that garnered nearly double the required number of signatures. According to reports, the group known as Oakland United to Recall Sheng Thao (OUST) submitted their petition two weeks ago, with Alameda County officials confirming on Wednesday that the threshold of 25,000 voter signatures had been met.
Retired Judge Brenda Harbin-Forte, who spearheaded the recall effort, expressed strong criticism of Thao's performance, accusing her of having "blood on her hands" due to the rising crime rates, instances of grand theft auto, and increased street robberies. Harbin-Forte emphasized that Oakland's business exodus accelerated under Thao's tenure compared to before she assumed office. Allegations were also made against the dismantling of the Oakland Police Department under the mayor's watch, a concern that was shared by recall supporters.
While Fox News Digital attempted to reach Harbin-Forte for further comment, no response was received by press time. However, she was reported to have described the recall as a "historic achievement" and a chance for voters to urgently address the perceived dishonesty and incompetence of the current mayor. Thao's office was also contacted by Fox News Digital, but a response was not received.
Not all city officials are in favor of the recall, with Council member Noel Gallo cautioning against potential divisions within city government. Nonetheless, Gallo expressed support for the right of voters to voice their concerns.
Recall proponents successfully collected 40,595 valid signatures on the recall petition. Videos posted by OUST showed signatories highlighting issues such as homeless encampments and frequent car break-ins. One resident even went as far as calling the state of the city the worst they have seen since 1985.
Among the criticisms lodged against Thao, recall organizers pointed to her failure to meet a grant deadline to combat retail theft, an issue for which the mayor later took responsibility. The firing of Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong also drew criticism, along with Thao's remark that the MLB's Oakland Athletics "won't be missed" following their decision to relocate to Las Vegas, where the NFL's former Oakland Raiders currently play.
Fox News Digital reached out to Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., for comment, but no response was received.
The recall effort against Mayor Sheng Thao highlights the deep-seated dissatisfaction among some Oakland residents. As the recall heads to the ballot in November, voters will have the opportunity to decide whether a change in leadership is necessary to address the city's challenges.
