Middle-distance runner Nikki Hiltz has achieved a groundbreaking feat at the U.S. Olympic Trials, solidifying their place as a formidable competitor on the global stage. On June 30, Hiltz recorded the second fastest time ever recorded by an American in the women's 1500-meter race, setting the stage for their journey to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Raised in Aptos, California, Hiltz discovered their passion for running at a young age. Their talent quickly became evident when they claimed the California women's 1600-meter state title as a junior in high school back in 2012. This achievement led them to earn a track scholarship at the University of Oregon.

After spending two years as part of the Oregon Ducks track team, Hiltz transferred to the University of Arkansas. During their time there, they earned seven All-American honors and achieved two runner-up finishes in the 1500-meter race at the NCAA Championships. Hiltz's exceptional performances laid a strong foundation for their professional career.

In 2018, Hiltz signed a contract with Adidas, officially becoming a professional runner. They had a successful first season in 2019, securing first place at the USATF 1 Mile Road Championships and setting a new course record. Additionally, they achieved third place in the 1500-meter race at the USATF Outdoor National Championships, qualifying for the IAAF World Track and Field Championships.

Despite facing obstacles and restrictive policies, Hiltz's determination remained unwavering. Last year, the World Athletics Council banned transgender women from competing at the highest levels of sport. This meant that Hiltz was unable to receive gender-affirming care, including taking testosterone. However, their resilience pushed them forward.

The road to the Olympics was not without its challenges. Hiltz missed qualifying for the Olympic Trials in 2021 but was determined to make a comeback. Their dedication paid off when they secured their ticket to Paris with a blazing time of 3:55.33.

Speaking about their achievement, Hiltz expressed gratitude for the support they received from the LGBTQ+ community. They acknowledged the role played by the community in their success and emphasized the importance of creating inclusive spaces for everyone to thrive.

Off the track, Hiltz has played a significant role as a race organizer. Since 2020, they have hosted an annual Pride 5k event, promoting inclusivity and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. The event has raised over $172,000 in its first three years, with proceeds donated to the Trevor Project, an organization offering crisis and suicide intervention for LGBTQ+ youth.
