In a stunning turn of events, NHRA drag racing legend John Force is steadily showing signs of improvement following a traumatic brain injury suffered in a fiery crash during the Virginia Nationals a week ago. According to a statement from his team, John Force Racing, the 75-year-old racing great is making remarkable progress in a neurological intensive care unit.
Initially, Force was unable to follow commands or move his extremities following the horrific crash that saw his car hurtle across the finish line at 300 mph before colliding with both concrete guard walls. However, after five days of heavy sedation, signs of recovery began to emerge.
Force gradually gained momentum, responding to commands such as giving a thumbs-up and even recognizing and addressing his family members by name, expressing his love for them. This encouraging development prompted the transfer of Force from a trauma ICU to a neurological ICU on Wednesday. Nevertheless, his recuperation is expected to be long and challenging, as mentioned by his team in the statement.
One of the major hurdles in Force's recovery has been managing his extreme agitation and confusion, which have caused him significant distress. The medical team continues to provide round-the-clock care and support to help alleviate these challenges.
The accident occurred during the first round of Funny Car eliminations on June 23, with Force's vehicle experiencing a catastrophic engine failure at the finish line. Miraculously, Force remained alert and even conversed with safety workers immediately after the crash. However, further examination by the NHRA medical team deemed it necessary to airlift him to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation.
John Force, a Hall of Fame owner and driver, has a history of battling through injuries. In 2007, at the age of 58, he suffered serious injuries in another racing crash. However, this has not dampened his spirit, as he has continued to race at the highest level. In fact, just four weeks ago, Force secured his record 157th NHRA victory and second of the season in New Hampshire.
With Force's daughter, Brittany, a two-time world champion, and her mother, Laurie, alongside his three sisters at the hospital, the racing community has rallied behind the Force family. In a display of unity and support, Brittany will not participate in this weekend's race in Norwalk, Ohio, opting to remain with her family during this challenging time.
As the racing community holds their breath and sends their well wishes, John Force's gradual improvement brings hope amidst the uncertainty. The legendary driver's determination to overcome his injuries serves as an inspiration to all, as he continues to fight his way back to full recovery.
