In a recent commencement speech at Benedictine College, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker stirred controversy with his remarks targeting the LGBTQIA+ community, women's rights, and diversity and inclusion. The speech has sparked a debate about freedom of speech in sports and the treatment of politically outspoken athletes.

Butker, who is Catholic, encouraged graduates to have "Catholic pride" but criticized what he referred to as "deadly sin sort of pride" associated with Pride Month. He also labeled diversity, equity, and inclusion as "tyranny" and expressed concerns about a support for "degenerate cultural values and media." Shockingly, he suggested that women should prioritize serving men as homemakers.

The speech drew sharp criticism for its vitriolic content and was denounced by the Benedictine sisters of Mount St. Scholastica, a sponsor of Benedictine College. Despite the offensive nature of Butker's remarks and their potential to incite violence and harm marginalized communities, the NFL issued a tepid statement distancing itself from the comments, stating that they were Butker's personal views and not reflective of the league's stance on inclusivity.

This incident has reignited comparisons to the treatment of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who famously kneeled during the national anthem to protest racial inequality. Kaepernick's peaceful protest resulted in his being labeled a "distraction" and essentially blacklisted from the NFL, while Butker's offensive speech seems to have few consequences for his football career.

The stark contrast in repercussions for athletes who express political opinions is striking. Kaepernick's protest was in response to real injustices, yet he faced severe consequences, while Butker's harmful comments about marginalized communities seemingly go unchecked.

The inconsistency and hypocrisy in how the NFL handles these situations is evident. While some argue that Kaepernick's actions took place on the field, we now live in a social media world where players' politics are not left behind when they step onto the field. Athletes have the right to express their opinions, but when those opinions involve spreading hate and discrimination, there should be consequences.

Butker's speech highlights the ongoing issue of athletes, particularly white athletes, being able to freely speak out against marginalized groups without facing significant repercussions. It raises questions about the true inclusivity and commitment to social justice within the NFL.

As this controversy unfolds, it is essential to address the double standards at play and demand a more consistent approach to ensure that athletes are held accountable for their actions and words. The NFL must do better in fostering an inclusive environment and taking decisive action when athletes perpetuate harm against marginalized communities.

Butker's NFL career may continue unaffected by his controversial speech, serving as a reminder of the unequal treatment within the sports industry. The broader conversation surrounding the freedom of speech in sports and the consequences for politically outspoken athletes is far from settled.
